DAVID BEALE / FOCUS LIBERATION

Three overlapping themes cut through David Beale’s photography

His photographs are taken largely in Britain but also across the world. He works in both colour and black and white, and likes exploring creative possibilities with a range of digital and film cameras.

About Focus Liberation

The strong sense of social justice informing David Beale’s documentary photography is often clear to see in his images but in some of his work it’s more implicit. Some shots are of workers’ and political campaigns and activists, others simply an honest and empathetic take on communities.

His landscape photography is a product of seeking respite and freedom in wild places of land and coast, whilst recognising and respecting both the often difficult history and present-day realities of such places.

Some of his portraits are of people he knows, whilst others arise from documenting strikes and protests or are from chance encounters whilst travelling.

These are overlapping categories of David’s work and they emerged naturally from what’s important to him personally. Many of the images were taken in the UK, others in Germany, India, USA, South Africa, China, Norway and The Netherlands.

He shoots in both colour, and black and white, and uses a range of digital and film cameras. He likes to explore, experiment and take creative risks with his projects.

He has previously worked in various areas of post-16 education in teaching, research and related administrative roles, and has authored academic publications on employment and trade union issues. He has also had magazine articles published on unions, politics and influential photographers.
